When I was a boy, Ozark was a small, sleepy town with a population of about 830. I recall the Public Square and old brick county courthouse. I also remember the Bald Knobbers, a vigilante band in southwest Missouri. The Bald Knobbers were arrested and held in the jail, and my father was assigned to watch their execution. The town was very safe, and it’s a good place to raise a family, and the jail was a great place to raise children.
Grandpa Southwick’s fortunes improved when he moved to the Ozarks. In addition to marrying a childless widow, Grandpa married Jerusha Jones, a childless woman who had been a doctor before. She brought with her 120 acres of mediocre land. The couple’s children were also raised in the Ozarks. The Southwicks were well-received and appreciated.
