The Ashgrove District War Memorial Fund, operated under the auspices of the Ashgrove RSL, sought approval from council to erect a memorial in this park. The park had been a site for Anzac Day services since the second World War, and the memorial’s stonemason, Ron Turmaine, was instrumental in its construction. The men began construction of the memorial on the night before Anzac Day in 1957.
