Clever is a city in Christian County, Missouri, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 2,139. The area is part of the Springfield, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is located 14.5 miles southwest of Springfield, Missouri. It is situated in the western panhandle of Christian County, south of Missouri Highway 14 and between the cities of Nixa and Billings. Nearby is Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield.
The area around Clever has experienced tornado activity that is comparable to Missouri’s average and 50 percent greater than the U.S. average. A category F4 tornado occurred 10.6 miles from the Clever city center on 11/29/1991. It killed two people and injured dozens of others. During the same year, a category F3 tornado struck the area, causing $48 million in damages. In addition to tornado activity, the area has experienced earthquake activity that is significantly higher than Missouri’s average, which is 575% higher than the national average.
In 1891, the community was named Clever after Farmer Ike Teague. Lentz thought the Clever residents were friendly and wise, and he proposed the name. The small town grew slowly in the early 1900s. By the year 1902, a blacksmith shop and second store building were constructed. In 1904, a tomato canner established his business. In February 1909, the town filed a petition to become a municipality, and a plat was approved by the Christian County court.
